Prioritizing the Vision of Our Youngest Clients
At Hastings Optical, we recognise that nurturing the vision health of our community begins with the youngest among us. Our specialised children’s eye testing services are designed to create a comfortable, engaging, and reassuring experience for both children and parents alike. Early detection of any vision issues paves the way for a bright, unobstructed future.
Gentle and Comprehensive Eye Exams
Understanding the unique challenges of examining younger patients, our optometrists employ a gentle approach, using tools and methods that are child-friendly. We make the process interactive and fun, ensuring children feel at ease.
What Our Children’s Eye Testing Involves:
- Welcoming Introduction: We start with a warm introduction where our team meets with the child and parents, easing them into the environment, explaining the simple steps, and answering any preliminary questions.
- Interactive Vision Assessment: Using eye charts with pictures, symbols, and letters, we evaluate several areas of vision and eye health, including:
- Visual acuity
- Eye tracking
- Depth perception
- Colour vision
- Overall eye health
- Detailed Discussion and Guidance: Post-examination, we discuss the results and observations in detail with the parents, offering advice, and, if necessary, solutions like glasses, exercises, or further evaluations for ensuring the best visual development.
Building a Vision for Success
Our commitment goes beyond the initial eye exam; we aim to contribute positively to your child’s visual and overall development. Regular eye checks mean potential issues can be identified and addressed early, setting your child up for success in school and other activities.

Let’s take a visionary step together towards ensuring their bright, successful future.
We recommend that children have their first comprehensive eye exam at around six months of age, followed by another at age three, and then before they enter the first grade. From then on, they should receive regular exams every two years if no vision correction is required.
Common signs could include persistent eye rubbing, sensitivity to light, difficulty focusing, or issues with tracking objects. If you notice any of these behaviours or have concerns, it’s best to schedule an eye exam.
Our optometrists and staff are trained in making children feel comfortable and even excited about their eye tests. We use simple words, fun imagery, and a gentle demeanour, turning the exam into a child-friendly experience.
